My name is Colin Randell and art has always been a part of my life, although I've only been steadily creating for about five years. Most of my work over this time has been experimental in trying to find my medium.

In January of 2011, my medium became pen and ink and since then I have worked solely in black and white and have been mostly concerned with range of value.

I am a firm believer in spirituality and different realms of reality. Along with these spiritual beliefs comes a hidden world in which I illustrate. Drawing is also a great therapy and a way to escape everyday stresses. In a way my art is similar to keeping a journal, only in images.

Every medium excites me! Most recently the oil stick, juxtaposed with my most frequently used favourite, the acrylics, has entered my life.

How gloriously brilliant they are! How versatile is this medium, as it allows the “drawer” in me to emerge in a painterly way.

Colour excites me! The use of a “non-local” colour palette is especially exciting. Water doesn’t have to be blue, trees don’t have to have leaves of green, water-eroded pebbles and rocks can expose their hidden hues.

To begin my experience with the use of non-local colour and oil sticks, I’ve focused on water. The movement of this phenomenal element of our earth can be soothing, exciting, mysterious, foreboding, threatening, infinite … As I’ve travelled, my camera has sought out rushing and trickling streams, crashing ocean waves, or thunderous river currents. This series expresses my appreciation of one of God’s wondrous creations … water.
